Kenya in general, and the city of Mombasa in general, is a relatively safe destination for visitors. However, the Government takes the safety and security of our visitors as a top priority. With this in mind,a Tourist Police Unit has been established as a unit to provide security for tourists on beaches, roads, streets, airports, bus stops, public parks, hotels, lodges, entertainment spots, museums, historical sites and market places. The Unit wiil provide coverage al all Hash runs and events
 This rapidly growing Unit is headed by a Commandant and has two administrative sectors the equivalent of a police division under which there are Police Bases.
In addition, there is a Safety and Communication Centre under the auspices of the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF), which is operated 24hrs a day to monitor visitor safety. The Kenya Tourism Federation represents the leading tourism trade associations.
This centre provides a 24hr TOURIST HELPLINE (02-604767) where one can seek assistance in case of need. The Safety and Communication Centre is manned by well-trained staff, who are at hand to attend to any issues of concern to tourists. These include security, health, road conditions, travel advisories and updates etc.
While every effort is taken to avert crime, real security starts with observing one’s personal security. Like you would in any major city, Hashers are advised to observe personal security by ensuring that you do not expose valuable jewellery, or huge sums of cash. There are reputable foreign exchange bureaus and Visa; Amex and MasterCard facilities are available in most areas. While Kenyans are very friendly people, we ask that you seek assistance from the Tourism police officers, who are easily identifiable by their police uniforms and TPU (Tourist Police Unit) badge on the left hand side of their shirts. Approach them for general guidance and information in case of doubt.
